  • Type of Construction of HT Capacitor Banks

    SINGLE PHASE CAPACITOR BANK

    We all know that in a pure sinusoidal waveform having inductive load the current leads the voltage by 90 degrees. The current drawn by the load is proportional to the voltage and impendence.But this is true only in case of pure linear loads. Resistive loads, constant speed induction and synchronous motors are pure linear loads.

    Railway traction load is different from normal industrial load. The loads in the section vary frequently. When there are no trains on the track at a particular section the load is almost zero. When a train comes there is a sudden surge in that section and at times there may be more than one train that will pass through that section in which case the load increases rapidly.


    Single PhaseTractionCapacitorBank

    The system of traction is of singe phase 25 KV. But due to strenuous operating conditions the Capacitors are designed for 40 KV. The harmonic levels are also very high especially of the 3rd order due to which 13% reactor is to be provided. A typical single line diagram and GA drawing is shown in figure above

    3 PhaseIndoorCapacitorBanks are provided with sheet terminal cover for enclosing the live parts. This can be mounted in any open room since the live parts are properly covered.

    INDOOR/OUTDOOR TYPECAPACITORBANKS

    For a larger size of indoor capacitor bank that has to be connected with series reactor special type CapacitorBanksare provided. This arrangement is ideal for indoor and the connections are very easy. This can also be offered for outdoor application with a canopy top for rain protection.

    FULLY ENCLOSED TYPE HT CAPACITORBANK

    Fully enclosed HT CapacitorBanks are also offered. This is a practice that is followed in DevelopedCountries for voltages upto 33 KV. They can be either indoor or outdoor. The advantages are that they occupy less space. Theyare ready made and require very little time for installation. Theyare especially useful in urban areas where there is shortage of space. Theyare presentable, safe and of compact arrangement.

    WIRE-MESH ENCLOSEDTYPE HT CAPACITORBANKS

    A fully enclosed wire-mesh enclosure is also an option. This can be mounted directly on-ground. Ventilation is very easy. We can see the complete CapacitorBank from outside which is an added advantage. Most suitable for roof mounting, indoor control rooms, mounting close to loads etc.
